Urbanscapes is a one-day workshop exploring urban landscapes in and around greater Boston. The urban lived and unlived environment presents intriguing and exciting landscapes to capture aesthetically, demanding a different approach to rural or nature landscapes.

In urban landscape photography we choose to blur the lines between more clearly defined genres of architectural photography, landscape photography and street photography.

While people might be included in an urban landscape, the focus is more on the built impact of human activity in the urban environment, than the pure people focus of street photography.

Participants will shoot in various urban locations (pre-selected by instructors), with the focus on lived and sometimes unlived urban landscapes.

We will look at elements of composition, artistic approach to urban landscape photography and help you to formulate a cohesive theme for an urban photography project.

This course is open to film and digital photographers, shooting in any format.

Who is this workshop suited to?

This workshop is suited to all levels especially those wishing to strengthen their skills in finding images in urban settings. The pace will vary from slow, contemplative planning to faster moving instinctual shooting, so you will find yourself interesting ways to capture what you see and sense.

Every participating photographer is expected to have reasonable competence, and should have a working understanding of exposure, aperture, and shutter speeds on a technical and aesthetic basis.

What will your day look like?

We will meet at at 9:00AM for a presentation and discussion, after which we will head out to shoot at approximately 11:30AM.

We’ll break for lunch and a chat, and then head back out to find more images. The shoot will ends at 4:00PM and we return to base to share our best images.
