The art of photographing people, and sometimes pets, is what portraiture is all about. We dig deep into what makes portraits work, and what does not. There is time to think and time to shoot on this one day course.
Portraits are the most common type of photograph made, yet a good portrait is remarkably elusive. We explore different forms of the portrait and look at the work of some famous and some not so famous exponents of portraiture - the art of capturing the spirit of a person.
We experiment with various techniques and devices, including lighting, composition, lens choice and even camera types. Then you will head out in groups to try out some new ideas.
If you need to borrow equipment, please let us know.

What will your day look like?
9:00 AM: We will meet at the classroom for the presentations of a wide range of work and demonstrations.
11:30AM: We head out in groups to shoot portraits either of the other participants, or of strangers.
Lunch: At your own discretion, I suggest bring a packed lunch and water.
2:00 PM: We meet at the classroom to look at the participant’s work, hopefully leaving us with a final hour to re-shoot or try new techniques.
Minimum requirements
Each participating photographer is expected to have reasonable competence, and should have a working understanding of exposure, aperture, and shutter speeds on a technical and aesthetic basis.
You may bring digital or film cameras of any format. If you are shooting digital, please bring a computer and card reader so that we can look at your work. A familiarity with a program like Adobe Lightroom or PhotoMechanic will be very useful for this.
Ensure you are prepared for the vagaries of New England weather, from cold to hot, dry to wet!. Whatever the weather, though, bring water and a hat.
