Who is this workshop suited to?

Designed for beginners or photographers who are in need of a refresher; if your free time is limited or if you prefer one-on-one guidance.

If you want to get the most out of your digital camera and learn the basics, this is the course.

If you are not familiar with your camera functions, please read the manual before the course and bring it along, so we can help you with your settings.

The workshop is over two half days, followed by an assignment and feedback.

By the end of the workshop

  • You will be comfortable with the functions of your camera.

  • You’ll have taken your first steps on the road of manually controlling the settings on your camera.

  • You will have a basic understanding of the Exposure Triangle: using Shutter Speed, Aperture, ISO under a variety of Available Light conditions.

Once you’ve registered, we’ll be in touch to sort out the specifics.

A Possible Scenario for your workshop

We have discussed your goals for our class and agree to meet in the greater Boston area, because one of your goals is to understand the basics of photography in the context of an urban/peri-urban environment.

During our first session you learn how to set up your camera and which of those buttons/functions you REALLY need. We then proceed to cover the basics of exposure while walking around, looking for images and applying what we discussed and what the mentor notices you might need.

You will leave with notes and tips.

While on your own, you continue to shoot and practice some of these new skills to cement and increase that knowledge ahead of our second session.

When we meet for our second session we review your intervening work and based on that experience, adapt the learning of the final day to suit you.

Minimum requirements

You may bring a digital camera of any format.

Please read your camera manual thoroughly. If you have worked through your camera and used it successfully prior to the course, you will gain much more out of it. Ensure you have one or two memory cards as well as a fully charged battery. Please bring your charger or a spare battery.

Ensure you are prepared for any weather eventuality and have a hat and water.
