This is an introductory course for beginners. We introduce you to the basic concepts of B&W film photography. How does aperture, shutter speed and available light combine to expose a scene on film?
Bring your own camera or borrow one of ours for the day to discover the joys of film photography.
We limit our numbers to small classes so that we can respond to the needs of each group, so this is a broad outline of what you can expect. We will adjust the class as needed.
What will your day look like?
Morning:
We start by going through the fundamental mechanics of film photography and instructing you in the main principles of the “exposure triangle”, a combination of shutter speed, aperture and film sensitivity that you need to utilize to calculate correct exposures for your images.
We talk a bit about basic principles of composition and then we put into practice these new skills by working with the available light in the immediate environment.
Afternoon:
After the shoot, we’ll gather for a debrief to discuss the experience.
Your films will be collected for processing and scanning. A follow-up meeting will be held on Zoom within 1-3 weeks to review the results of your shoot and discuss feedback and insights as a group.
By the end of the day
You will have a basic understanding of the Exposure Triangle: using Shutter Speed, Aperture, ISO under a variety of Available Light conditions.
You will have exposed your first roll of film.
Hopefully you’ll be hooked on a new hobby!
